Biome classification

2015-09-25 General, Development
In between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of... Err, yes but no... There was an age with a lot of brand new shiny biomes, much better.

But when/where/who/what biomes?

As of today, fauna and flora mainly define a biome. That’s why koalas live mainly in australian eucalyptus forests and are strangely inconspicuous in the Gobi desert.

And you may wonder how to choose a biome location in a world made of tiny blocks?

First off, I have selected the 9 most typical biomes, based on the dozens of existing biomes on our good ol’ planet: hot and cold deserts, steppes and 4 kind of forests.

Next, we can determine the biome using a simple matrix combining both average annual temperature and relative humidity.

Finally, we just need to know the temperature and humidity at a specific location on the Earth cube to generate the corresponding biome. But it’s another story.

To be continued...

@cyberjasse "the sun is just a scenery"
In fact, you can really travel to the sun but it's a long journey, you will need a lot of cookies to not starve in space.
Other planets are simply drawn in the skybox, they are not real, yet...

I'm glad to hear that there's going to be some logic behind the distribution and placement of biomes. Unlike Minecraft or Terraria where I've found a desert right next to a snow biome.

I've always said it. Computers aren't clever unless you tell them to be.

@N1KE the next download is coming soon but not this month. But surely in october ! And the sun is just a scenery. There are planets near the earth that you can reach but farther, they are a scenery

When will we get a new download for the game, with more features and more stuff to try out, also.. Is it possible to reach the sun and how does the other planets work, because I literally used 1 hour (not joking) just flying towards the sun and other planets, but never got any closer.

I was taught that biomes are dependent on the temperature and amount of precipitation, while humidity and precipitation almost go hand in hand, I'm wondering if there is going to be rain in the game? A high chance of rain in the wet biomes and close to a 0% chance of rain in the dry biomes...?

Seasonal modifications are not plan for the moment (seasons are not planned).

This list represent the biomes in the next intermediate version of the game, not the final one. We will increment the list during the future deliveries.

This chart looks like a very simple version of what a person might see in an AP Environmental Science class lol!
