Only two ways of getting closer to something?

Can I only get closer to say a couch by 1. moving towards it or 2. by time passing.
An example of 2 would be if I'm at work the time passing would mean I'm closer to being able to lie on that couch correct?

If I understand what you are saying correctly then yes, I would assume so.

3. If the couch comes closer to you, you come closer to it without moving. ;P
